Emphasis will be placed on methods that encourage students to engage in inquiry-based learning, actively make sense of the world around them, and connect new knowledge with what they have previously learned. The course will highlight the delivery of intellectually stimulating and inclusive instruction for elementary and middle school students, focusing on the development of both conceptual understanding and skills. Additionally, it will cover when and how to use various instructional methods, including teacher-led whole group activities, small cooperative learning groups, independent learning, and the integration of technology.

It will address how students develop mathematical understanding and how different groups experience mathematics instruction. The course will cover methods for teaching the scientific method, conducting inquiry-based laboratory work, and exploring the relationship between science, technology, and society. Additionally, it will discuss the use of technology in teaching specific areas of science (life, physical, earth) as well as in an integrated science approach.

This course will explore adolescent literature in its various formats, with attention given to writing across the curriculum and teaching students to write for different subject areas. It will address how students comprehend content material, the socio-cultural influences on reading, and the relationships between reading and writing. The course will cover the assessment of content reading and methods for teaching students to critically read and create media. Additionally, research on writing and its implications for teaching methods, as well as responding to and evaluating student writing, will be explored.
