This course introduces students to fundamental concepts and methods in epidemiology and population health. Students will learn how to measure disease incidence, prevalence, risk, relative risk, and related epidemiological concepts.

The course covers the design, analysis, and interpretation of studies using methodologies such as case-control studies, cohort studies, and randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Common issues encountered in these studies, such as attrition, censoring, biased sampling, model misspecification, and confounding variables, are explored in depth.

Additionally, the course addresses disease transmission dynamics and network models used to describe them, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of epidemiological research methods and their applications in public health.

Biostatistics introduces students to key statistical topics relevant to biological and health sciences. It covers various types of biological, medical, and health-related data and the statistical tools used for their analysis. Students learn to describe central tendency and variation within data sets.

The course explores the relationship between sample statistics and population values (inference) and introduces concepts such as hypothesis testing, power analysis, study design, and different sampling approaches. These skills are crucial for interpreting research findings, making informed decisions in healthcare settings, and conducting meaningful statistical analyses in biological and health sciences.

4 CREDITS

This course provides a foundational introduction to key concepts in biology applicable to all living organisms. It covers fundamental topics in biochemistry, cell biology, and genetics, illustrating how molecules are organized within cells. Cells are emphasized as the fundamental units of life, and the role of genes in information transfer within and between cells is explored.

Additionally, the course incorporates assignments that introduce experimental methods and explore research data repositories. These activities help students develop skills in approaching complex biological problems and locating relevant information for specific questions or methods.

Overall, the course serves as both a prerequisite for further studies in biology at the organism or population level and a general introduction to the production and application of biological knowledge.

This course delves into the current understanding of human health and disease, covering various aspects including etiology (causes), pathogenesis (development), diagnosis, treatment, prognosis (outlook), and prevention of selected diseases.

Topics include conditions resulting from trauma, developmental and congenital diseases, childhood diseases, as well as diseases and conditions affecting each system in the human body.

Through this exploration, students gain insights into the complexities of human health, disease processes, and the interdisciplinary approaches involved in studying and managing various health conditions.
