Overview

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is designed to enhance students' English language skills, preparing them for academic and career success. This non-degree, non-credit program consists of eight proficiency levels, with students placed according to their existing language proficiency. Upon completing the highest level, students will undertake the Oxford Test of English to demonstrate their English competency. As with our other programs, there is an assessment fee of $130 per course, which may be waived through university scholarships for eligible students facing financial constraints.

Admission Requirements

Anyone who has completed high school, is aged 16 or older, and can present a valid English test score from one of the following sources:

  • Accuplacer 
  • CEFR 
  • Duolingo 
  • EIKEN 
  • IELTS 
  • PTE 
  • TOEFL IBT 
  • TOEFL PBT 

Applicants lacking a valid English test score can choose between taking a Duolingo placement test during the application process or starting the ESL program at  Level 3. 


Curriculum / Courses

The goal of the English as a Second Language program is to enhance the proficiency of English learners. ESL classes cater to students' varying English abilities, interests, and requirements. Each student is placed in a level that aligns with their specific needs. The program covers essential language skills including grammar, reading comprehension, writing, and vocabulary.

Transfer Credits

Do you have credits from another accredited university? Excellent! Master’s degree students can transfer up to 50% of their total credits to People's United University. We offer free transfer credit evaluations, and if your credits are accepted, there is a nominal fee of only $17 for each course transferred. This makes continuing your education with us both flexible and affordable.
