Developing and managing efficient database applications requires a solid understanding of database management systems, design techniques, and administration principles. This course emphasizes database concepts, development, usage, and management in three key areas: concepts, practice, and emerging trends. While the primary focus is on relational database systems, other types, such as object-oriented databases, are also covered. The course highlights practical database design and the development of database applications using modern software tools.

This course covers the fundamental concepts of modern operating systems. We will explore the basic structure of operating systems, which revolves around three key ideas: virtualization, concurrency, and persistence. Through these principles, you will learn how an operating system manages the execution of user programs, controls attached devices, and serves as an interface between computer users and hardware.

The course will highlight the importance of accounting information in monitoring, planning, controlling, and decision-making processes. It will focus on the managerial applications of accounting information, enabling students to understand how managers utilize this information to analyze and evaluate operational performance. Students will develop specific skills such as identifying fixed and variable costs, calculating break-even points, determining the present value of cash flows to create capital budgets, constructing flexible budgets for manufacturing purposes, applying non-routine decision-making methods, and conducting financial trend analysis for interpreting financial statements.

This course will equip students with an understanding of an organization’s internal financial conditions and how decision-makers manage these resources in relation to external markets and institutions. It will delve into the finances of economic development and explore sources of early- and late-stage financing. The course will address real-world challenges in corporate finance. Students will gain specific skills such as financial trend analysis for interpreting financial statements, calculating the present value of cash flows to construct capital budgets, determining bond interest tax shields and their impact on a firm’s average cost of capital, building corporate valuation models, and assessing how different sources of capital affect a firm’s capital structure costs.

This course will focus on the theory and practical skills needed to assess customer interests, desires, and needs, identify organizational alignment, and leverage the organization’s ability to respond effectively. It will examine the relationship between marketing and other business functions and address the challenges faced by organizations serving international and cross-cultural markets. Students will be tasked with developing a comprehensive marketing plan for a new startup or a new product or service for an existing entity. This plan will include selecting target markets, conducting market research, and determining strategies for brand management, pricing, and the promotion and distribution of products and services.

This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental principles for understanding human behavior within public organizations. It explores various theories aimed at explaining and predicting employee behavior in an organizational context. The course delves into individual and interpersonal behavior in organizations, covering topics such as personality, decision-making, personal perceptions, teamwork, conflict, leadership, power, ethics, and influence. Additionally, it examines organizational-level factors that impact behavior, including change management, internal reward systems, culture, and organizational communication.

This course examines how an organization’s values and actions impact both internal and external stakeholders. It explores the importance of promoting responsible behavior within organizations and among employees. Students will analyze real-world dilemmas, gaining experience in balancing competing positive values, making decisions among fully legal options, and navigating the grey areas that often accompany critical management decisions.

Project management empowers organizations to optimize scarce resources to achieve strategic objectives within specified timelines. This course comprehensively covers tools and methodologies for managing projects and programs, both large and small, from inception through completion. Students will learn fundamental principles and practices of contracting and procurement, emphasizing the project manager's role in these processes. Utilizing this knowledge, students will develop a detailed project plan encompassing needs assessment, rationale articulation, step-by-step processes, resource identification, role assignment, cost and timeline estimation, establishment of controls, risk mitigation strategies, and methods for monitoring and evaluating effectiveness relative to identified needs.  

3 CREDITS

This course is the final required course in the MSIT program. It provides students with the opportunity to apply their acquired knowledge and research skills to a practical system design project, demonstrating mastery of all program outcomes. The Capstone Project also integrates business-oriented concepts from the program’s required Business Administration elective courses into the system design process. As part of this course, students will present their project to their Course Instructor, either live or via recorded video.

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) delves into the theories and technologies that elucidate the intricate relationship between humans and computing systems. This course covers the human-computer interface in the design and development of technologies, considering cognitive and social characteristics of users, as well as the limitations that influence design and implementation decisions.

Students will learn to identify the phases of cyber attacks, understand various threats and their motivations, and become familiar with the tools, resources, and techniques used in cyber-attacks. Additionally, the course covers strategies and techniques for mitigating these threats, providing a comprehensive foundation for protecting information systems.
